Clogged Drain: Homeowner Troubleshooting
Slow drains are common—main-line problems are different
This page is for one clogged sink, tub, or shower. A clogged toilet is a different page. Multiple fixtures backing up at once is main drain clog (or sewer backup if sewage is present).

Single drain vs. multiple drains
One fixture slow or stopped
Often a local clog in the trap or branch line (hair, grease, soap scum, food waste). Stay on this page.
Several fixtures affected (e.g., tub and toilet, or basement floor drain plus sinks)
Stop DIY on this page. Use main drain clog. If sewage is in fixtures or on the floor, use sewer backup and emergency plumbing.
Safer first steps (single fixture)
- Stop using the drain to avoid overflow.
- Remove and clean the stopper / strainer; pull visible hair and gunk.
- Try a sink plunger (not a toilet plunger cup style if you can help it—match tool to fixture). Seal overflow openings on sinks with a wet cloth when plunging.
- Check the P-trap under sinks if you’re comfortable: place a bucket, loosen slip nuts, clear debris, reassemble carefully without cross-threading.
- If the kitchen clog is the disposal itself (hum, jam, reset), leave this page for garbage disposal repair.
If water drains after these steps, run hot water briefly and monitor. Recurring clogs deserve professional clearing—not endless chemicals.
What to avoid
- Harsh chemical drain cleaners as a default—especially if you might need a pro next (chemicals can create hazards in the pipe and for technicians). Never mix chemicals.
- Store-bought “solutions” poured after another chemical already went in.
- Over-the-counter acids on older or damaged pipes without knowing pipe material.
- DIY snaking into the main sewer—if you don’t know cleanout orientation, you can make a mess; that’s main drain clog / sewer backup territory, not a sink clog.
Kitchen vs. bathroom clogs
Kitchen: grease and food solids in the sink trap or branch. Prevention beats cure: wipe grease into the trash. Disposal jams belong on garbage disposal repair. Bathroom: hair and soap on a tub or shower drain. Strainers help. A stopped toilet is clogged toilet, not this page.
When to call a professional
Call (844) 936-0420 if:
- A single drain is still stopped after the safer steps above
- The clog keeps coming back in the same fixture
- You’re not comfortable opening a trap
Ask the pro what a single-fixture clearing visit includes. High-pressure main-line cleaning is hydro jetting—don’t treat it as a sink clog.
If several drains gurgle or overflow, go to main drain clog. If sewage appears, go to sewer backup.

FAQ
Is a slow shower drain an emergency? Usually not, unless water is overflowing and damaging floors, or other fixtures are backing up.
Can a dishwasher cause a local kitchen clog? Yes—discharge lines and air gaps can stop one sink. Mention recent appliance use when you call. Disposal hardware issues belong on garbage disposal repair.
Will you quote a fixed clog price online? No. Access, clog location, and pipe condition change the job. Ask for pricing clarity before work proceeds.
